He made his maiden debut in 1987 with a minor role in an Indian film directed by Mahesh Bhatt. Kumar appeared as the lead actor in Saugandh (1991) before appearing in the first film of the Khiladi series, Suspense Thriller Khaldi (1992). That same year, he appeared in Pramod Chakravorty’s film Deedar.
