Several young Indians hope to gain a competitive edge over their peers by pursuing a master’s degree abroad. A degree from a renowned foreign university helps these aspiring individuals boost their career growth, empowering them to seek new opportunities. However, securing a seat at one of the top universities in countries like the US, the UK, and Canada requires significant effort. Applications include essays, personal statements, previous academic records, and a GRE score. Let’s better understand the Graduate Record Examination (GRE).

What Is the GRE Exam?

The GRE is a competitive exam students must complete to gain admission to various graduate courses abroad. The test assesses the candidate’s academic knowledge and skills. Universities use the GRE score to evaluate whether a student is a good fit for the program.

Understanding GRE 2024

The Educational Testing Service (ETS) administers the GRE every year. The computer-delivered test takes three hours and 45 minutes, including a ten-minute break. The flexible and user-friendly format allows candidates to skip questions within a section, change answers at any time during the test, and choose which questions to answer first.

GRE Exam Preparation

Students preparing for the GRE should familiarise themselves with the test format. The GRE has three sections:

Analytical Writing

The section measures the student’s ability to examine claims, articulate complex ideas, support ideas with sufficient arguments, and sustain well-formed arguments. Candidates can showcase their English writing skills through this section. Students must complete two tasks, each of which is timed separately.

Analyse an Issue

The task evaluates the candidate’s ability to think critically. Students must express their personal opinions about the given topic. Candidates should read the instructions and guidelines carefully to avoid unnecessary mistakes.

Analyse an Argument

Here, students have to read a piece of content where an author provides arguments to make claims about a specific event or topic. Candidates have to discuss the argument and examine the claims based on the provided instructions.

Each task takes 30 minutes, so students have 60 minutes to complete this section.

Verbal Reasoning

The section has two sub-sections of 20 questions each. It evaluates the student’s ability to identify the crucial details from a text. Candidates must complete three activities throughout the section – text completion, reading comprehension, and sentence equivalence.

Text Completion

Students are provided a passage of one to five sentences with a few blank spaces. They have to select the correct answer to complete each blank.

Reading Comprehension

The task has three smaller tasks. The first two are multiple-choice questions students must answer after reading the passages. The third task is called select-in passage. Here, candidates must select a sentence within the passage that fits the description.

Sentence Equivalence

The section has a single sentence and a blank space. Students must select the correct answers from the provided options.

Quantitative Reasoning

The quantitative reasoning section evaluates the student’s ability to analyse and interpret quantitative information. Candidates must rely on their geometry, algebra, problem-solving and data analysis skills for this section. Students can utilise an on-screen calculator during the exam to answer the quantitative comparison questions, data interpretation sets, numeric entry questions, and multiple-choice questions.

GRE Subject Tests

Aspiring students may have to complete a subject GRE test based on their preferred course. Candidates can choose one of the following subject exams:

  • Biology
  • Chemistry
  • English Literature
  • Mathematics
  • Physics
  • Psychology

Thousands of institutes accept the GRE exam qualification score and use it to decide whether to admit a student to the course.

GRE Dates 2024

The ETS conducts the online GRE throughout the year. Candidates can register without worrying about the GRE registration last date. Students must remember to select a GRE online exam last date that provides adequate time to receive their score and apply for their preferred master’s program.

GRE Exam Eligibility

Students do not have to meet specific eligibility criteria based on age, qualifications, or nationality to appear for the GRE. However, students with a bachelor’s degree planning to pursue a Master’s or doctoral program benefit the most from taking the exam.

How Can a Loan for Study Abroad Help?

Students hoping to study abroad often worry about the cost. Apart from tuition and living expenses, they also have to consider exam registration fees and the purchase of textbooks and other study materials. Opting for an education loan helps alleviate this financial stress. Education-focused lenders like Avanse provide up to 100% financing for everything from exam registration costs to tuition and travel expenses. Additionally, Avanse offers a free EMI calculator for education loan tool to help students plan their future finances.

Pursuing a higher education overseas can open several doors to young professionals. The GRE can increase their options and boost their application. While preparing for the exam, students can rely on education loans for the registration costs, leaving them free to focus on acing the test.
